An Equipment Operator position is available with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Services Department within its Solid Waste Services Division – Drop Off Stations. Drop Off Stations are open to Fort Worth homeowners and some renters for disposal of trash, brush, recyclables and household chemicals. The Solid Waste Services Division of the Environmental Services Department operates and award-winning program that continually serves as a role model for managing garbage, recycling and waste reduction services for the residents of Fort Worth. The Drop Off Stations receive more than 250,000 visits per year and this position requires individuals to have extensive customer service experience to accomplish customer needs and requires patience to consider customer’s perspectives on services and solutions by being approachable to the customers.

Minimum Qualifications: 

• High School Diploma
• One (1) year of experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
• Valid Texas Driver License.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class “A” or “B” at the time of hire based on assignment with no air brake restrictions.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain a Waste Screening Certificate and a Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Extraction Certificate.
• Candidate selected for hire must pass Pre-Employment Drug Screen, Physical and Criminal Background check.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Candidates that possess a Waste Screening Certificate and a Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Extraction Certificate at the time of applying.
• Basic computer skills: including email, data entry, and ability to create and close work orders.

The Equipment Operator job responsibilities include: 

• Greet citizens, verify residency and ensure City of Fort Worth Solid Waste Fees have been paid; inspect contents and estimate cubic yards of loads before allowing entry into the facility drop off area; and ensure material follows federal and state regulations.
• Enter recycling, mixed trash, remodeling materials and other pertinent data into the computer while providing excellent customer service.
• Keep track of inputs and outputs in different software systems and databases of solid waste materials received at Drop Off Stations and sent to the landfill and other recycling facilities.
• Direct traffic at facility and maintain facility to ensure debris is properly containerized and spills are cleaned up as needed. Separate and properly store household chemicals in preparation for hauling and recycling.
• Operate and maintain packing mechanism on stationary waste and recycle compactors at facility. Operates handheld blower to keep work area clean.
• Extracts CFC refrigerant from refrigerators, freezers and air
• Operates Caterpillar, John Deere and Case Excavators with grapple bucket and roto-boom grapple trucks to manually pack debris in roll-off containers and relocate materials.
• Notify the hauling contractor when roll-off waste containers need to be transported to the Notifies contractors when oil and electronics need to be hauled for recycling.
• Maintain cleanliness of facility by picking up litter and loose material around facility.
• Maintain records as required by state regulatory
• This is a heavy public contact position due to the high volume of visits at our facilities.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
