Position Overview
The Copy Editor Contractor will provide high-quality editing and proofreading support for Leanlab’s long-form research reports, which communicate findings from studies with education technology companies. This role requires a strong command of AP style, a keen editorial eye for grammar, clarity, and consistency, and the ability to ensure readability for non-technical audiences while preserving technical accuracy. Typical projects range from 15–50 pages and may include contributions from multiple authors with varying writing styles. The contractor will edit directly in Google Docs, tracking changes and ensuring consistency across formatting, terminology, and tone.
This is a flexible contract role with project-based assignments. Work will often be assigned with approximately one week’s notice and a one-week turnaround window. Project volume will vary seasonally, with higher demand in fall and spring during peak reporting periods.
Key Responsibilities
Edit and proofread long-form research reports (15–50 pages) for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and adherence to AP style.
Ensure clarity, consistency, and readability across multiple authors’ contributions.
Review technical content for comprehension and accessibility to a broader audience (non-specialist readers).
Track changes and edits in Google Docs, providing clear feedback and suggestions to authors.
Conduct light fact-checking and reference verification as needed.
Maintain consistent tone, style, and formatting across all reports.
Collaborate with the research team to meet deadlines and ensure high editorial standards.
Key Qualifications
Demonstrated experience as a copyeditor, preferably with long-form reports or journalism.
Proficiency with AP style.
Strong grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
Ability to edit for clarity and comprehension without sacrificing accuracy.
Comfort working with technical or research-based content (education or technology preferred, but not required).
Experience editing collaborative documents and managing tracked changes in Google Docs.
Excellent time management and reliability under tight deadlines.
Self-directed and adaptable to changing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Background in journalism, English, communications, or related field.
Experience working in a college writing center or supporting academic/research writing.
Prior work with nonprofit or education-related organizations.
Contract Details
This is a fully remote, project-based contractor role.
Assignments will vary seasonally, averaging 5–15 hours/week during busy periods.
Compensation: $25–$55 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Contractor must be authorized to work in the United States.
